This photo shows the El Zuqba Peninsula as seen from orbit. The salt marshes (mallahets) dry up in summer leaving salt behind that is commercially extracted. These mallahets fill during the rainy season in the winter. The 24 km road is guarded by Egyptian military personnel as the entire peninsula is in a military restricted zone. Egyptian Coast Guard personnel also bar foreign access to the peninsula. The indigenous population is Beduoin. They use trucks with low inflated tires to dry over sand dunes.
